Lower Moreland History

image of George McMahon Blacksmith ShopLower Moreland Township is a part of what originally was a 10,000 acre land grant William Penn made to Nicholas Moore in 1682 at the founding of Pennsylvania. After Moore’s death in 1689, his children began to sell off pieces of what was then the “Manor of Moreland.” When Montgomery County was established in 1784, 2/3 of the Manor of Moreland became a part of the new county and shortly thereafter became “Moreland Township.” In 1916, Moreland Township again was divided, establishing the municipalities of Bryn Athyn, Upper Moreland and Lower Moreland.
